Over 40 years of construction and development of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy, by the leadership of the Party Committee and Rector Board, with cooperation and support from domestic and international partners, and the efforts of all staff and students, the University had moved greatly for the better in quality as well as quantity of service, and made many memorable achievements. At Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy, healthcare personnel are educated and trained, to contribute to the wellbeing of people in the Mekong Delta and in all of Viet Nam. It is a great honor for the staff of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

In July 1979, the Faculty of Medicine
of Can Tho University was founded; the first course had 97 medical students. As
of current, the number of students studying at Can Tho University of Medicine
and Pharmacy, undergraduate and graduate, has exponentially increased, with
over 12.000 students in total.

On December 12th, 2002, the Prime Minister signed
to establish Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy under the Ministry of
Health, based on the Faculty of Medicine – Dentistry – Pharmacy of Can Tho
University. On March 22nd, 2003, the Ministry of Health held an
official ceremony to announce the foundation of Can Tho University of Medicine
and Pharmacy. In the early years, the University was faced with great obstacles,
without sufficient lecture halls and offices, students and staff have to work
and study in rental places all around Can Tho City; the financial and personal lives of staff were strained.
However, overcoming the challenges in those first years, all of staff had
joined hands together to complete assigned duties. The pedagogical collective
of the University strives to uphold the virtue of the teacher, in spite of
external hardship, always nurture the quality of education, fulfilled the basal
missions of the University during those difficult years. The University, even
though officially established, remained without a campus for several years.

In December, 2008, six years long after the initial decision of establishment signed by the Prime Minister, the first foundation was laid for the new campus of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy, a 3.000 square meters complex for general medical services; following, many buildings was constructed for students and staff to work and study. A new page had been opened for Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy.
Professional training for staff, especially lecturers, plays a key role in determining the educational quality and development of a University. Therefore, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy has been assiduously organizing training for the staff, facilitating lecturers to pursue post-graduate education at domestic and international universities. In the first year of establishment, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy had only 217 members of staff, among whom there were 1 Associated Professor, 5 Doctors of Philosophy, 27 Masters of Science, 1 Second Level Specialist and 167 lecturers. Thanks to this rightful approach, the University now has 651 members of staff; among whom there are 2 Professors, 24 Associated Professors, 48 Doctors of Philosophy, 229 Masters of Science, 25 Second Level Specialists, 453 lecturers and 381 visiting lecturers.
In addition to education, scientific research is an important
mission of a university lecturer. Since the first year of establishment, Can
Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy has placed focus on the organization of
research activities, thereby promoting the research capabilities of lecturers
of the University. The science research paper of the University is published
four times every year, and countless conferences on technology, sciences and healthcare
has been held at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy, attracting the
participation of not only staff and students from local schools, but also from
universities in the Mekong Delta, all over Vietnam and abroad.

Since 2009, the University annually publicizes results of self-evaluation according to the criteria of the Ministry of Education and Training, and registered for education accreditation; the educational curriculum was assessed and updated, and the University implemented credits system into the education program. Contemporarily, multiple research projects, in cooperation with the provinces of Ca Mau, Tra Vinh, Bac Lieu, Soc Trang, were proposed. In August, 2012, the University signed comprehensive cooperation agreement with Vinh Long province, in order to utilize scientific achievements in medicine to better local healthcare quality.
In the 2008 – 2019 period, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy welcomed 257 delegations abroad. Many countries had sent representatives to visit Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy, among whom were from the United States, the Netherlands, Thailand, and others. International cooperation activities helped University lecturers to improve professional knowledge, approach modern healthcare systems and technologies as well as education.
In April 13th, 2017, the Prime Minister signed a Decision to approve of the Scheme of operation innovation. The University was assessed and met the criteria for education accreditation. In 2017, the University registered for Objective Assessment of Quality. In March, 2018, by the Decision No. 81/QĐ-CEAUD, the University was certified to meet the quality criteria of educational institution, and on June 2nd, 2018, certified by the Da Nang Institute of Educational Quality Accreditation.

As to the Party Committee, the University has 5 party
departments and 7 party cells. The Party Committee plays a central role in
comprehensively leading the University in all facets. Several consecutive years
qualified as virtuous and enduring foundational Party organization, the Party
Committee of the University has been tirelessly encouraging the movement to
study and take after the moral virtue of Ho Chi Minh, and attending to the
development and reinforcement of Party organization. The Party Committee
coordinated many healthcare delegations to rural areas, providing medical care free of cost to over 90.000
visits of local people, people of ethnic minorities; the Party Committee aids
in alimentation of 2 heroic mothers of Vietnam, constructed 5 charity houses
and unity houses.

Thanks to the efforts of all of staff ever since the first day, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy had received many valuable awards from the Party and Government, including: First class Medal of Labor (2014), Second class Medal of Labor (2009), Third class Medal of Labor (2000), Certificate of Compliment of the Prime Minister (2012), Competition flag of the Ministry of Health, among others.
Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy – the center for training of workers for the fields of medicine, scientific research and healthcare of the people in the Mekong Delta and in Vietnam. The vision of the University is to be a University of Applied Health Sciences. All of staff and students of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy faithfully strive to achieve this development and innovation of the University.
