The meeting built on a memorandum of understanding signed by the University of Sydney and Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy on September 7, 2023. Discussions focused on expanding cooperation in research, with particular emphasis on clinical trial development.

The visiting delegation included Ms Nicole Wong, Senior Clinical Trial Support Team Leader at the University of Sydney; Ms Stephanie Toovey, Clinical Trial Contract Manager at the University of Sydney; and Ms Ma Thu Thuy, MSc, Deputy Director of the Clinical Trials Unit at the University of Sydney Vietnam Institute.
Representing CTUMP were leaders and representatives from the University Office and the Office of Science and Technology. From the university hospital, participants included Associate Professor Vo Pham Minh Thu, MD, PhD, Deputy Director of the Hospital, Associate Professor Nguyen Trieu Viet, MD, PhD, Deputy Director of the Hospital, and heads of several clinical departments.

During the working session, both sides discussed the implementation of research activities at the institution, exchanged experience in clinical trial support, and explored directions for future cooperation. The discussions went beyond existing research capacity, opening the door to broader collaboration in specialties such as cardiology, oncology, and surgery.
The talks also highlighted a longer-term vision: building a support network for the planned Mekong Delta Center for Tropical Diseases and Medical Research, which would operate under Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy.
Following the meeting, the delegation toured the Hospital to gain a closer look at its clinical departments and technical infrastructure. The visit included exchanges with specialists in diagnostic imaging and general surgery, offering the Sydney team a more detailed understanding of the hospital’s professional capacity and areas of potential collaboration.

The meeting was held in a friendly, open and constructive spirit, further strengthening the partnership between Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy and the University of Sydney, including the University of Sydney Vietnam Institute. It also underscored a shared commitment to developing high-quality, in-depth research projects that will contribute meaningfully to community healthcare across the region.
